Boy that was quick.

I know it’s not over yet, but since we just finished our last gigs of the year, I thought it would be a good time to talk about 2012 and 2013.  Big thanks to Molehill, especially Trevor, for helping us put together the shows at The Fire and the Velvet Lounge this past weekend!  I’m looking forward to seeing what they do next.

After taking a few years off of gigging to focus on writing and recording, it was good to kind of get my toes wet again in 2012.  Big thanks to Chris and Andrew for being awesome and helping me get acclimated to the Philly scene.  Hard to believe I didn’t even know those dudes this time last year.  Big thanks to Pete for doing sooooo much driving in his girlfriend’s car.  (Oh, thanks Christine).  And especially big thanks to the friends and fans who came along for the ride as we experimented with Philly venues!  It was really a classic Goldilocks situation:  this one is too hot, this one is too cold, this one doesn’t even have working taps… It’s been a crash course in how this stuff works in 2012 (you’re paying me… how much?  Wait, to split 4 ways?).  I’m pretty sure I took something constructive away from every show, even if it was something like “try to sweat less.”

I’ve gotten some awesome feedback about Man Up.  I absolutely love that different people have different favorite songs.  Not to pat myself on the back too much, but I think every track has had at least one person claim it’s their favorite.  I’m not sure every writer gets that.  I love hearing the preferences of people of different ages, genders, whatever.  I would get really tired of writing in the same style all the time, so I’m really thrilled to get a variety of responses.  Ever since I got to college and it really struck me how completely subjective musical taste is – the different things we all listen to and hear in the same songs, the different takeaways – I’ve enjoyed exploring the differences.

Of course, I have to give another shout-out to the Mariska Hargitay fans for helping to shape 2012 for me.  I saw a rumor out there that this song has been out for like, 10 years and has mysteriously taken off in 2012.  No, it’s very much a song from late 2011 that I am super glad people somehow found right away and started making those videos!  Keep those downloads coming so we can support the Joyful Heart Foundation!

Thanks to Gashouse Radio and WMMR for their support.  All press is good press, but good press is… goodest.

I was originally gonna talk about 2013 also, but let’s save that for another post.  To sum up:

Chris’s hair went from short to long.  Andrew’s and my beards disappeared and came back.  Pete can’t grow facial hair to save his life.

I guess that was 2012!
